Boone High NJROTC is awarded “Most Improved” unit in the Nation

Unit logged a whopping 9,000 community service hours

September 10, 2012 – Boone High School began the new school year with a national honor. The school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) was awarded the “Most Improved” NJROTC unit in the nation. The unit will be recognized for this national award at the Central Florida Navy League luncheon on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Radisson Hotel, 1724 N. Alafaya Trail, at 11:30 a.m.

Boone’s NJROTC received this national award for their dedication and service to the Central Florida community. The award is being presented from the United States Navy League based on a recommendation from the NJROTC Area Commander and on a total point scale which measures the achievements of each unit. The United States and overseas units comprise 11 different areas with 619 NJROTC units and over 300,000 Cadets. The Boone High Unit achieved the second-most total points of all the units and had the most community service hours of any of the 619 schools; over 9,000 total hours.

The unit also excelled in other areas including: 100 percent graduation rate for all senior cadets, five National Honor Society inductees, 10 cadets with unweighted GPA’s of over 3.5, three Eagle Scouts, and three cadets receiving full Navy ROTC college scholarships totaling over $600,000.

With the leadership of Commander Craig F. Rouhier, the unit now has 175 cadets at Boone High School for the 2012-13 school year. Cadets serve as great role models and ambassadors for the school. They are often relied upon by the principal, administration, and students. Commander Craig F. Rouhier said, “We could not have had the 2011-2012 year that we had without the help of the Boone High School administration, especially our principal Dr. Margaret McMillen and assistant principal Carlota Iglesias.”

Also, on September 11, 2012, the Orange County School Board will recognize the Boone NJROTC unit for their national award prior to the regularly-scheduled school board meeting at Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
